UK SRS Explained

The UK's own version of the global ISSB standards — voluntary today, mandatory for listed companies from 2027.

Last reviewed: July 2026

What UK SRS is

UK Sustainability Reporting Standards (UK SRS) are the UK's endorsement of the ISSB's global IFRS S1 and S2 standards, with a small number of UK-specific amendments. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) published the final UK SRS S1 and S2 on 25 February 2026, following a consultation that closed in September 2025. They are available for voluntary use now.

The path to mandatory reporting

On 30 January 2026, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) published consultation paper CP26/5, proposing to replace the UK's existing TCFD-aligned Listing Rules with UK SRS-aligned requirements. The consultation closed 20 March 2026, and an FCA Policy Statement is expected in autumn 2026. See our FCA CP26/5 guide for the detail.

Proposed timeline

FromRequirement
NowUK SRS S1 and S2 available for voluntary use
Financial years beginning on/after 1 January 2027UK SRS S2 (climate) proposed mandatory for in-scope listed companies (roughly 500–515 companies)
2028Scope 3 emissions disclosure on a comply-or-explain basis
2029UK SRS S1 (general sustainability disclosures) on a comply-or-explain basis

The "sleeper" expansion to watch

The UK government has separately indicated it will consult on changes to the Companies Act 2006 that could extend UK SRS obligations beyond listed companies to certain private companies. Nothing is confirmed yet, but this is worth watching if your company is privately held and currently assumes UK SRS doesn't apply to you.

How this relates to existing UK obligations

UK SRS sits alongside, not instead of, existing requirements like Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) and the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) — these continue in parallel rather than being replaced.

How UK SRS relates to ISSB globally

UK SRS is one of 28+ jurisdictions' local implementations of the same underlying ISSB baseline — see our ISSB guide for the global picture, and our ESRS vs ISSB comparison for how this differs from the EU's own framework.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is UK SRS mandatory yet?

Not yet — it's currently available for voluntary use. The FCA has proposed making UK SRS S2 mandatory for in-scope listed companies from financial years beginning on or after 1 January 2027, with a Policy Statement expected autumn 2026.

Does UK SRS apply to private companies?

Not currently, though the UK government has signalled it will consult on Companies Act 2006 changes that could extend obligations to certain private companies in future — nothing is confirmed yet.

How is UK SRS different from ISSB's IFRS S1/S2?

UK SRS is the UK's own endorsement of the global ISSB standards, with a small number of UK-specific amendments — it's not a completely separate framework, but check the specific amendments if you're comparing disclosures across jurisdictions.
